This event brings together 500 senior-level IT decision-makers in a day of networking, spirited discussions and informative discourse concerning today's business and technology issues.

This year's theme: "Maximizing the Business Value of IT" will be discussing the impact of recent IT developments along two tracks: Technology & Business and IT Organization. Businesses are looking for ways to leap ahead of their competitors. This symposium will help answer those questions.

Symposium Theme Summary

Over the last 5 years as businesses have dealt with major shocks to our economy, including the terrorist strikes in 2001 and the tech market crash in 2000-2002, they have had to adjust their strategies accordingly. Many businesses reassessed their growth plans and instead reverted to defending and maintaining their competitive positions. As we move into the second half of this decade businesses are looking for ways to leap ahead of their competitors with product and customer service innovations, expansions into new markets, and mergers & acquisitions. How will CIOs impact these strategic plans and how can information technology investments improve the competitive positions of firms?

Panel Tracks

The 2006 MIT CIO Symposium will be discussing the impact of recent IT developments along three tracks: "CIO: The CEO of the IT Line of Business", "The CIO's Technology Toolkit", and "On the Horizon - Trends and Opportunities".

In the first track we will look at the Seven Habits of Highly Effective IT Leaders. Looking internally, how do CIOs managing IT people, their skill sets, their teams within their own information management infrastructure? How do they organize teams to create processes that are flexible, creative, and rigorous? Looking externally, how do CIOs manage the interaction with the rest of the firm and integrate with the myriad of skills, challenges and opportunities? How is the role of the CIO's organization evolving within the modern enterprise? Is it an overhead cost center, a COGS center, a revenue driver?

In the second track we will look at the tools at the CIO's disposal. Where and when are outsourcing and hosted solutions good for your business? What is the business impact of tagging and knowledge management, and how does this relate to maintaining data security and quality? What is the reliability and security of open vs. closed source software? Is there an optimal information infrastructure for the loosely-coupled enterprise?

As an extra bonus, our third track will be introducing attendees to the latest thinking from some of the Institute's leading professors and practitioners, as well as emerging technologies. How are firms using these technologies? What kind of returns are they seeing? Are your competitors gaining or losing ground through innovations that you have not considered?
